Keep Dogs from Digging under Your Chain Link Fence in San Ramon

Many homeowners have dogs digging under chain link fences at San Ramon properties. It is easy to understand that they would be frustrated. They want to keep their dogs inside their yard and other animals out. We offer several suggestions on ways to keep your pet from digging under your San Ramon chain link fence.

Dogs dig instinctively for a number of reasons:

  • They want to hide something from other animals
  • They want to find something that has been hidden underground
  • They want to find someplace cool or to create a den
  • They are tired of being where there isn’t activity
  • They want to chase another animal or to be with dogs that are running free

When you see your dog dig, their purpose isn’t to make owners angry at them, they are simply doing an activity that is natural and inbred.

Veterinarians suggest using Dig Defence which is welded wire that can be hammered into the ground around the area where dogs dig. You may need this product in one precise location or hammered into the ground for the entire fence. It is suggested that you do homework to decide if this option is right for your property and your budget. You can also use tent stakes hammered through the lowest chain link fence links.

You might also want to buy chicken wire to place where your dog digs. Choose 24 inch high chicken wire and dig into the ground where your pooch is trying to escape. The goal is to bury about 12 inches of wire into the ground. Attach the wire above ground to the fence by using zip ties or coated wire. When the dog tries to dig in their favorite spot, it will not feel good and they will stop. You may need to repeat this in new spots they may decide to dig.

If you know your dog is going to dig, why not give them someplace that they CAN dig? Choose an area several feet wide, deep and long. Dig the area up and fill it with a combination of dirt and sand. This will be easier for your furry friend to dig into. You can bury snacks or one or two of their toys to encourage them to dig in only that location. Obviously, this may not be an option that is feasible for every family, but it might work for some.

Make sure your dog has shelter within your fenced yard. If there is inclement weather, or it is unbearably hot, the shelter will get them out of the heat and rain. You will also want to have toys your dog can play with while they are alone in your yard. It is also recommended that you play with your dog while it’s in the yard and that it is taken for a walk occasionally. If your dog understands that you will pay attention to it daily, they may have fewer reasons to dig around the fence.

These are only a few of many options you may find about keeping your dog from digging under your chain link fence in San Ramon. You may be able to find other options, but these are at least a few to consider if your dog has been digging around your fence.
